Why I Don’t Clip Coupons Anymore

I probably get more questions about our grocery budget than any other part of our budget. People seem perplexed that I’m able to feed the six of us for $175 or less per month (including toiletries and cleaning products!). One of the common questions people ask is: So are you one of those extreme couponers then?  The answer is that I don’t coupons AT ALL. Ever. Not even a little bit. So why not?  Everybody knows you can get a TON of free food with coupons… right? Surely coupons are the only way to spend so little. I used to coupon relentlessly. I would spend hours Read More

Weekly Menu: July 10th – 16th

Recently I did something I’ve never done before: I bought some groceries online! Here’s a little breakdown on how some of the different Amazon programs can save $$ on groceries. Amazon: Let me tell you about some of the different pricing options on Amazon: Subscribe & Save: This means that you are signing up for an automatic shipment in a few months. The good thing is that you can cancel as soon as your order ships, so you’re not obligated to stay on or purchase anything further. (I write in my date book to cancel, so I don’t forget!) For purchasing 1-4 S&S items in a calendar Read More

Weekly Menu: July 3rd – 9th

So I failed in two major ways this week. I didn’t write a menu. AGAIN. I didn’t make it to Walmart until today… Thursday. Usually I try to go on Saturday, or Monday at the latest. So Thursday is bad for me. I don’t know what my deal has been this summer. I feel a little crazy with my husband gone for military training. If anything, that should make me want to be more efficient instead of decidedly less so. But I’m just trying to be honest and transparent with you guys. We have gotten McDonald’s and Little Caesar’s Hot’n’Ready pizzas a few times. Sometimes I make the kids Read More

June Bulk Shop & Menu Totals

I’m a little late on the menu post this week, but I did eventually get my shopping done! I made two trips to the store this week: my usual weekly trip to Walmart and my regular monthly bulk shop at Gordon Food Service. I do most of my shopping at GFS, buying ingredients in bulk to save money (and increase our health by cooking from scratch!) I did not write an actual menu this week like I usually do. There are several reasons for this: my oldest kid is at camp and the ones left at home don’t eat much we are going out to dinner Read More

Weekly Menu: June 19th – 25th

It’s VBS WEEK AT CHURCH!!! Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of VBS. Call me a bad Christian if you want, but pretending to have fun while I sing dumb songs with motions with my kids is not my idea of a good time. But one thing I do like: free dinner!! My church is feeding us dinner every night this week! Score!! So since I had a little bit of extra money in my grocery envelope, I splurged a little on myself. In fact, almost half of what I bought this week was food for ONE meal (breakfast) for ONE person (me). So here’s our menu Read More

Weekly Menu: June 12th – 18th

We still have a TON of leftovers from last week’s dinners. It’s amazing how little we eat with Byron out of town! I didn’t even cook the chicken azteca that I planned on making last week, so it got pushed to this week. So let’s take a look at my plan for the week!   As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & eggs every day, with the occasional variance. Snacks are also not on the menu, but my Read More

Weekly Menu: June 5th – 11th

I think I’m getting the hang of this. My husband has been gone {for military training} for two weeks now (10 to go!), and I finally have a menu and a bit of a routine going one. As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & eggs every day, with the occasional variance. Snacks are also not on the menu, but my kids do get a snack each afternoon around 4 pm. Their choices are veggies (usually carrots and celery), Read More

Weekly Menu: May 29th – June 4th

As you may have seen in my video last week, things sure are different around here with my husband out of town! One week down, eleven to go! As much as I miss him, one of the benefits of his absence is that I’m cooking a lot less! The kids don’t eat much, and I don’t either, so I only need to cook a few times a week and the leftovers last really long (a little too long, perhaps). I’m trying something a little different this week: I’m buying the ingredients for two full dinners, plus whatever fill-in items we need. But I’m not planning on Read More

Weekly Menu: May 15th-21st

This week is jam-packed for us. We have a ton going on, all of which is throwing our regularly-scheduled-programming out of whack. Because we are eating at various parties and events for most of the week, going out of town for part of it, and eating leftovers for the in-between days, I didn’t need to buy groceries this week. Let’s take a look at this crazy week’s menu, shall we? As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & Read More

Weekly Menu: May 8th-14th

It seems like not that long ago I would regularly spend $100-150 a week at the grocery store. This week I spent $42 and it was an oddly large week for me — most weeks now I spend under $20! It’s a weird feeling to spend so little, but also very cool and freeing to know that we have been able to change our lifestyles so drastically! Let’s take a look at this week’s menu, shall we? As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget Read More
