Weekly Menu: July 3rd – 9th

So I failed in two major ways this week. I didn’t write a menu. AGAIN. I didn’t make it to Walmart until today… Thursday. Usually I try to go on Saturday, or Monday at the latest. So Thursday is bad for me. I don’t know what my deal has been this summer. I feel a little crazy with my husband gone for military training. If anything, that should make me want to be more efficient instead of decidedly less so. But I’m just trying to be honest and transparent with you guys. We have gotten McDonald’s and Little Caesar’s Hot’n’Ready pizzas a few times. Sometimes I make the kids Read More

June Bulk Shop & Menu Totals

I’m a little late on the menu post this week, but I did eventually get my shopping done! I made two trips to the store this week: my usual weekly trip to Walmart and my regular monthly bulk shop at Gordon Food Service. I do most of my shopping at GFS, buying ingredients in bulk to save money (and increase our health by cooking from scratch!) I did not write an actual menu this week like I usually do. There are several reasons for this: my oldest kid is at camp and the ones left at home don’t eat much we are going out to dinner Read More

Cheap Family Vacations!

Taking vacations with the family are awesome — you get to see new places, do new things, spend time together & make memories… but the expenses can add up FAST. Here are some ways to cut costs to the bone, so you can travel MORE and experience MORE with your money! TRAVEL OFF SEASON Like I mentioned in my post about all the ways homeschooling is cheaper than public school, homeschooling gives us the awesome benefit of traveling off season. We went to Spain in February (hello sunshine!). We did a 3 week tour of England, Scotland, and Ireland in September. We went to Italy Read More

Weekly Menu: June 19th – 25th

It’s VBS WEEK AT CHURCH!!! Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of VBS. Call me a bad Christian if you want, but pretending to have fun while I sing dumb songs with motions with my kids is not my idea of a good time. But one thing I do like: free dinner!! My church is feeding us dinner every night this week! Score!! So since I had a little bit of extra money in my grocery envelope, I splurged a little on myself. In fact, almost half of what I bought this week was food for ONE meal (breakfast) for ONE person (me). So here’s our menu Read More

Weekly Menu: June 12th – 18th

We still have a TON of leftovers from last week’s dinners. It’s amazing how little we eat with Byron out of town! I didn’t even cook the chicken azteca that I planned on making last week, so it got pushed to this week. So let’s take a look at my plan for the week!   As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & eggs every day, with the occasional variance. Snacks are also not on the menu, but my Read More

🎉 How to Throw a Frugal Birthday Party 🎈

Birthday season just ended in my house. Among my four kids, we have one birthday in January, two in April, and one in May. I love celebrating with them and making it special, but I don’t love the price tag that comes with many traditional birthday party options. If you look at the website of a company that hosts parties — places like bouncy gyms, roller skating rinks, playplaces, etc. — it’s not uncommon for parties to cost several hundred dollars, or even as much as a thousand. That’s a LOT to pay for a few hours of fun. So I wanted to tell you some of Read More

Weekly Menu: June 5th – 11th

I think I’m getting the hang of this. My husband has been gone {for military training} for two weeks now (10 to go!), and I finally have a menu and a bit of a routine going one. As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & eggs every day, with the occasional variance. Snacks are also not on the menu, but my kids do get a snack each afternoon around 4 pm. Their choices are veggies (usually carrots and celery), Read More

Weekly Menu: May 29th – June 4th

As you may have seen in my video last week, things sure are different around here with my husband out of town! One week down, eleven to go! As much as I miss him, one of the benefits of his absence is that I’m cooking a lot less! The kids don’t eat much, and I don’t either, so I only need to cook a few times a week and the leftovers last really long (a little too long, perhaps). I’m trying something a little different this week: I’m buying the ingredients for two full dinners, plus whatever fill-in items we need. But I’m not planning on Read More

Life with One Vehicle

A few years ago when Byron decided to go to seminary and leave full time active duty Army service for a season, we made a lot of decisions about what our life would look like during this period of time. For example — we were adamant that we would pay cash for a house. We did spending freezes to boost our savings. We cut back on certain indulgences in our lifestyle. And we transitioned to a one-car family. I wanted to tell you a little bit today about how much it has benefited us to do so! Benefits of having just one vehicle   More Read More
