Hayes Presidential Center

We love to go on field trips in our homeschool. Recently we were passing through Fremont, Ohio on our way to another destination, so I checked out the website for the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums to see if it would be worth our time to make a pit stop. I was elated to see that it was listed as a Blue Star Museum so our whole family got to get in for free with my military ID! The Hayes Museum has two main parts: the Presidential home and the museum. Our first stop was to take a tour of the home, but we could see Read More

Toledo Botanical Gardens

This year in our homeschool, we’ve been studying plants in science class. I have been loving this subject, because it has given us lots of opportunities to get outside and enjoy God’s creation! A few weeks ago, we went on a field trip to the Toledo Botanical Gardens in Toledo, Ohio. I wanted to share with you some photos and a few things I loved about it (and a few I didn’t). A few other things I loved: Free admission AND free parking! Walkability: it was big enough to explore, but not so big that it would be exhausting for the kids to see it Read More

Ohio Day Trips: Tiffin Civil War Museum

We love field trips in our homeschool! We try to take one every week {though sometimes I fail and skip it} A few months ago, we were learning about the Civil War in history, and I was surprised to find that there was a Civil War Museum in Tiffin, Ohio, only about 30 minutes from where we live! We’ve lived and traveled all over the world, and I’ve personally visited many of the world’s best museums. I have to say, most of them have one thing in common: they are not very kid-friendly. It’s unfortunate, really, that more places don’t make an effort to reach Read More

Put-in-Bay

One of my favorite things about this school year is that we have been going on a field trip every single Friday! We’ve been learning about the War of 1812 in history class, and I was delighted to discover that one of the biggest battles of the war {and the turning point for the U.S.!} happened not far from us, in Lake Erie on a little island called Put-in-Bay! So of course the kids were delighted to find out that we were going on the LAKE on an ISLAND and on a BOAT. Sophie got to call the shots {literally!} when he fired an authentic Read More

Indian Creek Petting Zoo

Recently we took a little trip over the border into Michigan to visit Indian Creek Petting Zoo. It’s located in Lambertville, Michigan, just outside of Toledo, Ohio. My dad had scored a good deal on a Groupon ($25 for our tickets instead of $40), so he gifted us some tickets for our admission. We’ve been learning about animals this year in science class, so it was the perfect time to visit. We went on a drizzly Friday morning, so it was not crowded at all. Here are some of the animals we got to see (and touch!) during our visit: Overall, we had a really Read More

How We Go to the Zoo (with FREE printable activity sheets!)

In our homeschool this year, we’ve been doing Field Trip Fridays – with a fun educational outing each and every week. We’ve been to some pretty neat places, but one of our favorites is the zoo! I don’t know about you, but a trip to the zoo with a vanload of kids can be pretty stressful for me. That is, until I changed the way I did things! Here’s my failproof, stress-free zoo plan! 1. Break it up. Don’t try to see the whole zoo in one trip. There’s no rule that says you have to look at everything every time you go! For our Read More
