Why I Don’t Clip Coupons Anymore

I probably get more questions about our grocery budget than any other part of our budget. People seem perplexed that I’m able to feed the six of us for $175 or less per month (including toiletries and cleaning products!). One of the common questions people ask is: So are you one of those extreme couponers then?  The answer is that I don’t coupons AT ALL. Ever. Not even a little bit. So why not?  Everybody knows you can get a TON of free food with coupons… right? Surely coupons are the only way to spend so little. I used to coupon relentlessly. I would spend hours Read More

Weekly Menu: July 10th – 16th

Recently I did something I’ve never done before: I bought some groceries online! Here’s a little breakdown on how some of the different Amazon programs can save $$ on groceries. Amazon: Let me tell you about some of the different pricing options on Amazon: Subscribe & Save: This means that you are signing up for an automatic shipment in a few months. The good thing is that you can cancel as soon as your order ships, so you’re not obligated to stay on or purchase anything further. (I write in my date book to cancel, so I don’t forget!) For purchasing 1-4 S&S items in a calendar Read More

Weekly Menu: July 3rd – 9th

So I failed in two major ways this week. I didn’t write a menu. AGAIN. I didn’t make it to Walmart until today… Thursday. Usually I try to go on Saturday, or Monday at the latest. So Thursday is bad for me. I don’t know what my deal has been this summer. I feel a little crazy with my husband gone for military training. If anything, that should make me want to be more efficient instead of decidedly less so. But I’m just trying to be honest and transparent with you guys. We have gotten McDonald’s and Little Caesar’s Hot’n’Ready pizzas a few times. Sometimes I make the kids Read More

Weekly Menu: June 12th – 18th

We still have a TON of leftovers from last week’s dinners. It’s amazing how little we eat with Byron out of town! I didn’t even cook the chicken azteca that I planned on making last week, so it got pushed to this week. So let’s take a look at my plan for the week!   As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & eggs every day, with the occasional variance. Snacks are also not on the menu, but my Read More

Weekly Menu: April 24th – 30th

My husband is gone again this week — off to sunny Florida this time. Lucky duck! For that reason, we’re having more leftovers than usual, because I still cook the same amounts but then we just eat the leftovers longer. It makes this frazzled mom have to do less cooking!   As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & eggs every day, with the occasional variance. Snacks are also not on the menu, but my kids do get Read More

December Bulk Shop {& yearly totals!}

Each week when I post my weekly menus, I share that most of my groceries come from my bulk shopping trips to Gordon Food Service. Today I’m going to show you what I got this month (and how much it cost) — as well as my monthly average for the year! My purchases and how long I expect them to last: 15 dozen eggs (2 months) 1 gallon olive/canola oil blend — I usually buy just olive oil, but they were out, so I bought the blend. (6 months) 1 canister of oatmeal (3 weeks) Large case of sausage links (6 months) My total for Read More

My September Bulk Shop

When I share my weekly menus each week, I always say how most of my groceries come from my bulk shopping at GFS. Today, I’m going to show you what I purchased this month! The things I bought at GFS this month were the following: There are a few things I wanted that I did NOT buy — namely chicken. But it was not on sale and I did not have a coupon, so I decided to wait. We are almost out of chicken, so I guess I need to go easy on chicken dinners for a while. I mentioned in July (the last time I bought Read More

Bulk Shopping at GFS

I started posting my weekly menus this week, and I explained that the majority of my meal planning and food comes from my big pantry shop. I do this once — sometimes twice — a month, and almost exclusively at a store called Gordon Food Service, or GFS. Here are the reasons why I LOVE to shop this store! 1. There is no membership fee. Anybody can go in and shop, any time. You don’t have to pay to become a member like other bulk-buying stores. 2. Price are low! For most products, the prices are lower per ounce than my local Walmart. There are some Read More

Couponing in Germany

I was a pretty serious couponer before I moved to Germany. Boy, was I shocked when I got here. My first several months in country, my grocery bill more than tripled what it had been in the states. Finally I got my bearings and figured out a few things that helped me save money over here. Commissary Rules First, let’s talk about the rules at the overseas commissary. 1. The commissary (and PX) take coupons 6 months past their expiration date. So if the coupon expires 6/30/14, you can use it until 12/31/14. This is nice, because sometimes by the time coupons make their way Read More

Things I always get for free

There are so many different ways to get things for free. One of the easiest ways is to request freebies online. Many companies are jumping on this social networking bandwagon and offering freebies if you “Like” them on Facebook. Others offer freebies right on their own websites. There is also a whole page on Walmart’s website where you can request free samples. There are other companies, like Vocalpoint, who also send out free samples. The point is, there are lots and lots of freebies to be had out there. I find most of them by following freebie blogs (my favorite is www.freebies4mom.com). Another way to get things for free Read More
