June Bulk Shop & Menu Totals

I’m a little late on the menu post this week, but I did eventually get my shopping done! I made two trips to the store this week: my usual weekly trip to Walmart and my regular monthly bulk shop at Gordon Food Service. I do most of my shopping at GFS, buying ingredients in bulk to save money (and increase our health by cooking from scratch!) I did not write an actual menu this week like I usually do. There are several reasons for this: my oldest kid is at camp and the ones left at home don’t eat much we are going out to dinner Read More

Weekly Menu: May 29th – June 4th

As you may have seen in my video last week, things sure are different around here with my husband out of town! One week down, eleven to go! As much as I miss him, one of the benefits of his absence is that I’m cooking a lot less! The kids don’t eat much, and I don’t either, so I only need to cook a few times a week and the leftovers last really long (a little too long, perhaps). I’m trying something a little different this week: I’m buying the ingredients for two full dinners, plus whatever fill-in items we need. But I’m not planning on Read More

April GFS Bulk Shopping Trip

I just love shopping at Gordon Food Service for most of my family’s groceries! We get great deals on almost all of our staples: flour, sugar, rice, spices, eggs, cheese, sausage, and more! This month’s bulk trip turned out to be almost completely cheese! It’s my favorite food, so I guess it makes sense that we go through quite a bit of it! Here’s my receipt from my trip: What I got, and how long I expect* it to last: 2 canisters of oatmeal (1 month) 3 huge 5-lb bags of cheese: 1 each mozzarella, cheddar, and mexican blend (mozzarella – 4 months, cheddar – Read More

March Bulk Shop at GFS

If you’ve been following my weekly menus here on the blog, then you know that the majority of my groceries come from my monthly bulk shops at Gordon Food Service. I try to make most of the things we eat from scratch, using whole ingredients like eggs, flour, chicken, beef, cheese, brown rice, etc. Here is my receipt from GFS this month: This is what I bought, and how long I *estimate* that it will last (my estimates are always a guess, as sometimes we go through things faster or slower than I anticipated): 15 dozen eggs – 6 weeks Mozzarella sticks – 1 month {impulse Read More

Weekly Menu: January 24th-30th {& January Bulk Shop!}

We have a very special birthday tomorrow — my little Lia turns EIGHT. I plan on sharing more about our family’s birthday celebrations later, but I wanted to bring it up because part of our celebrations is letting the birthday child choose breakfast, lunch, & dinner on their special day! So take note that Tuesday’s menu was completely planned by Lia!   Here’s what we are eating this week! As usual, a few notes before we get started: Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & Read More

My November Bulk Shop

Some of my pantry stores were running pretty low, so I had a BIG bulk shop at GFS this month. I also found some great prices on some produce items, like apples and bananas, which are usually part of my weekly fill-in shops at Walmart. So let’s take a look at what I bought, and how long I expect it to last: 25 pound bag of brown rice — 24 months huge box of bulk tortilla chips — 1-2 months cheese sticks — 2-3 months 2 large bags of shredded cheese (1 mexican blend and 1 cheddar) — 2-3 months 30 pack of yogurt — Read More

Weekly Menu: October 25th-31st

I can’t believe October is almost over! I’m loving all the great stuff going on around town, because we are getting to enjoy a lot of fun and also eat a LOT of free meals — which is great for the budget! (That was one of my tips in this post about how to save even more on dinner!) I even splurged this week and bought some bagged crispy chicken strips, which are usually in my NO WAY price range, but because we’ve been saving so much lately I went for it! Let’s look at this week’s menu! Again, a few notes before we get Read More

Bulk Shopping at GFS

I started posting my weekly menus this week, and I explained that the majority of my meal planning and food comes from my big pantry shop. I do this once — sometimes twice — a month, and almost exclusively at a store called Gordon Food Service, or GFS. Here are the reasons why I LOVE to shop this store! 1. There is no membership fee. Anybody can go in and shop, any time. You don’t have to pay to become a member like other bulk-buying stores. 2. Price are low! For most products, the prices are lower per ounce than my local Walmart. There are some Read More
