My Favorite Books of 2016 {WIN ONE!!!}

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy Den

Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE TO READ.

Each year on Goodreads I set a reading goal, and I have never gone a year where I haven’t surpassed it. Reading is the only way I know to truly decompress, slow down, and rest. This year I just barely met my goal:

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy Den

Last year, I wrote a post outlining How Busy Moms Can Read More as well as my top books for 2015. A lot of readers came back and told me how much they enjoyed my favorites, so I thought it would be fun to do another post about this year’s picks, as well as another giveaway!

So without any further ado, here are my 2016 favorites!

Best Guilty Pleasure: Sisterhood Everlasting, by Ann Brashares

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy Den

About a decade before this book came out was a book series called Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I read all the books in the series and fell in love with the girls and their friendship. It was so popular that they even made a not-as-good-as-the-book movie about it. Fast forward to today, and the author Ann Brashares has written Sisterhood Everlasting, a follow-up novel about the girls who are no longer girls: grown-up women with their grown-up struggles. It’s like a Where Are They Now catch up for any Sisterhood fan. I completely geeked out when I found out about this book, and I eagerly loved every page. It’s like my favorite fictional characters grew up with me!

Best Devotional: Directed, by Brenda Pace

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy DenThis book spoke to me on such a personal level. It’s written for military wives (though I think it would be fitting for anyone who lives a transitional lifestyle), by a fellow military wife Brenda Pace. It came to me at the perfect time: just as we were preparing for a big move of our own. God knew that I would need this book and the peace of the Holy Spirit that came with it in the midst of our crazy transition.

And to make it even better, I got this book (and 3 others) for FREE. The American Bible Society gives them away, and all you have to do is fill out a form to request it! The 4-devotional set comes with beautiful glossy paperback books encased in a nice collectors box. Click this link to get your own copy. (And somebody let me know if/when this promotion ends, if you find the link no longer working!)

Best Teen Fantasy Series: Lorien Legacies, United As One

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy DenI love teen fantasy books: The Hunger Games, Divergent, Twilight (don’t hate!), just to name a few. This year I read 3 series and it was hard to choose a favorite, but I had to pick Lorien Legacies again — as the grand finale United As One came out this year! It’s fast-paced and exciting at every turn, and you won’t believe the twists!

Read more about this series in last year’s post about my 2015 books. If you are new to the series, definitely start at the beginning!

Best Character Development: The Ladies’ Room, by Carolyn Brown

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy DenThe Ladies’ Room is a novel about a middle-aged woman who overhears a conversation in the church ladies’ room that flips her life upside-down. It’s a heart-wrenching tale about her quest to figure out her place in the world and to find courage within herself. I loved the development of her character, as well as the depth of the supporting cast!

Best Parenting Book: The Beautiful Chaos of Parenting Teens, by Leneita Fix

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy DenI read a lot of parenting books. Too many, my husband would say. But to put it plainly, I feel like veteran moms have a lot of wisdom to impart. Reading parenting books by Christian parents I trust is my modern-day version of asking the old ladies in the village for advice.

The Beautiful Chaos of Parenting Teens came to me at a time when I desperately needed some guidance for my burgeoning tween. Connor turned 10 this year, and it seemed like overnight he was a different kid — one I couldn’t relate to, and one with whom I was constantly butting heads. This book gave me tons of real-life applicable strategies to grow and enrich our relationship. It also gave me so much hope in the years to come, that parenting teens doesn’t have to be something I dread, but rather something I cherish.

Best Book for Christian Growth: A Trip Around the Sun, by Mark Batterson and Richard Foth

Win one of my favorite books of 2016! ~ Our Cozy DenEveryone needs that wise old man, imparting wisdom and sharing tales of their youth. This book tells the story of bestselling author Mark Batterson (his book The Circle Maker made my list last year) and his mentor Richard Foth. It’s not just a story though — it’s so much more. It tells about adventures, regrets, bravery, and so many life lessons that I could not name them all. I finished this book feeling inspired to my core to do more for God, step out in faith, and to be the sort of Christian that makes the devil quake in his boots.
