Hayes Presidential Home & Museum ~ Ohio Day Trips from Our Cozy Den

We love to go on field trips in our homeschool. Recently we were passing through Fremont, Ohio on our way to another destination, so I checked out the website for the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums to see if it would be worth our time to make a pit stop. I was elated to see that it was listed as a Blue Star Museum so our whole family got to get in for free with my military ID!

The Hayes Museum has two main parts: the Presidential home and the museum. Our first stop was to take a tour of the home, but we could see within the first 5 minutes that it wasn’t going to work for us. {Guided tours = not so good for little kids.} The guide was giving tons of great information and detail, but it was just too much detail and not enough movement for my kids. They didn’t have the attention span to stand for 15 minutes in the foyer while the guide spoke about every piece of furniture and art in the space. So we left the home tour pretty early on.

Into the museum we went!

This place was MUCH more fun for the kids. First of all, we could meander at our own pace. Secondly, it wasn’t hands-off like the home. Kids like to touch things!

One of the first things we saw was this wall full of cards. There was a sign that said something along the lines of “What would you do to help people if you were President?” {I didn’t take a photo of the sign, so I don’t remember its exact wordage.}

The kids were very excited to write their own ideas down and add them to the wall!

The gift shop had lots of fun books and toys. Hayes Presidential Home & Museum ~ Ohio Day Trips from Our Cozy Den

And there was even one of the Resolute Desks on the property!! Connor is a huge National Treasure fan, so he looked for the secret compartment. Hayes Presidential Home & Museum ~ Ohio Day Trips from Our Cozy Den And I made him take a photo similar to the one of JFK’s son.

Then we practiced our State of the Union address. Hayes Presidential Home & Museum ~ Ohio Day Trips from Our Cozy Den

Played war with some old cannons: Hayes Presidential Home & Museum ~ Ohio Day Trips from Our Cozy Den

And browsed through the displays of clothing, dishes, weapons, animals, & more! Hayes Presidential Home & Museum ~ Ohio Day Trips from Our Cozy Den

The favorite room of all four kids, hands-down, was the dollhouse room. (Yes, even the boys!) There was a large dollhouse in the middle of the room, encased in glass, that belonged to one of the daughters of Hayes. Off to the side in this room was a huge dollhouse that the kids could go inside, with magnetic walls, and furniture that they could move around! They had a great time playing in it! Hayes Presidential Home & Museum ~ Ohio Day Trips from Our Cozy Den
