This year in our homeschool, we’ve been studying plants in science class. I have been loving this subject, because it has given us lots of opportunities to get outside and enjoy God’s creation!

A few weeks ago, we went on a field trip to the Toledo Botanical Gardens in Toledo, Ohio. I wanted to share with you some photos and a few things I loved about it (and a few I didn’t).

Spring is a lovely time of year to study flowers, don’t you agree?

We always travel with clipboards, and I have a small activity for the kids to do.

Our activity this time was to identify and draw several different kinds of flowers.

The garden was absolutely beautiful, almost whimsical.

It was lush and green!

One thing that I didn’t like — not many of the plants were labeled. There were only a few signs like this, but the vast majority of the plants were unlabeled.

There were many different kinds of pretty flowers!

And a gorgeous pavilion nestled in the garden!

Finn did a pretty good job of drawing several different kinds of flowers… but he also drew Lightning McQueen and The King… lol.

Connor is always diligent in searching for JUST the right ones — not just anything can go on his paper!

These flowers were so interesting: they grew on a tree, but instead of budding at the leaf, they all had stems!

I let them pick up a few flowers that were on the ground — of course I didn’t let them pick one!

Isn’t this the prettiest bridge?

After we finished the scavenger hunt, we took off to just explore.

Connor LOVES finding cool doors. I literally have dozens of photos of him in doorways like this.

Lia was tickled to find a daffodil — her favorite flower!

Behind the cool door, we found what the kids called a “Secret Garden” — they were so enthralled by the idea that I promised to read them the book soon!

Now everyone else wants a turn taking a pic by the door.

Sophie is the only kid who really likes being in photos! The others just tolerate it.

We also found this cool tree that the kids wanted to play in and make a clubhouse.

A blessed rare photo of all four! I almost never get those!

A few other things I loved:

  • Free admission AND free parking!
  • Walkability: it was big enough to explore, but not so big that it would be exhausting for the kids to see it all.
  • Beautiful and well-maintained.

A few things I didn’t:

  • Lack of labeling on plants.
  • Lack of educational or learning materials (the Cleveland Botanical Garden does this extraordinarily well, but I’ll post more about that later!)
