Northwest Ohio Day Trips: Mazza Museum ~ Our Cozy Den

We love field trips in our homeschool! For the past two school years, we have had a field trip every week, and it has made school so much fun! Sometimes they are simple, like a nature walk in the park, or a morning spent ice skating. Other times we visit local museums, parks, festivals, attractions and more!

As I mentioned when I introduced our 2016 school year, one of our elective subjects this year is ART. We have been using How To Teach Art To Children, which is awesome. It goes through all the different components of artwork, as well as famous artwork and their media.

We started off by learning about lines — all different kinds: straight, curvy, criss-crossed, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, zig-zag, etc. And we talked about how lines are visible in everything we see. I had the kids draw a large grid on a piece of paper, to make 6 boxes on each side. Then in one column on each side of the paper, they drew a different kind of lines that we had learned about. Then we headed off to the local Mazza Museum {in Findlay, Ohio} to do a lines scavenger hunt!

There are several reasons why I love this museum:

  • Free admission, free parking!
  • The artwork is from children’s books, and they have the books available to read under each piece of art.
  • The artwork and the museum are both child-friendly.
  • There is usually nobody there except us, so we have freedom to do our lessons how we like.
  • The staff is so sweet and friendly!

When we arrived, we started our scavenger hunt — looking for the lines & patterns that they had drawn in their boxes! When they found it, they would sketch a recreation of the picture.

When they finished their lines scavenger hunt, we took some time reading stories and checking out the books! The kids especially loved the new Pop-Up Book gallery, which has amazing pop-up books, and displays the process that the artists went through to get their images to pop up! Northwest Ohio Day Trips: Mazza Museum ~ Our Cozy Den

Of course my little Star Wars fanatic loved the Star Wars books on display! Northwest Ohio Day Trips: Mazza Museum ~ Our Cozy Den

And the girls loved the princess books! Northwest Ohio Day Trips: Mazza Museum ~ Our Cozy Den

In addition, the Mazza Museum hosts an open house called Funday Sunday once a month during the school year. It’s a huge funstravaganza! It always has face painting, live shows, crafts, snacks, activities, games, and more — and it’s free!

They also have story times during the week!

Check out their website for upcoming dates for all they offer!

{This post was not sponsored by the Mazza Museum in any way — it’s just a place our family loves to visit and I wanted to share!}
