Weekly Menu: September 27th – October 3rd

Weekly Menus from Our Cozy Den ~ Feeding a family of 6 on under $250 a month!

September is almost over!!! The cooler temperatures have surely set in, and I’m excited for all things Autumn. I think I’ll decorate for Fall this week!

Here is my menu & receipt for the week!

Again, a few notes before we get started:

  • Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. But it is included in my budget and shopping. We pretty much eat oatmeal & eggs every day, with the occasional variance.
  • I recently did a post about my large once-a-month pantry shop. I try to plan most of my menu to use what we already have on hand in the pantry and freezer. Bulk buying = BIG savings!
  • Snacks are also not on the menu, but my kids do get a snack each afternoon around 4 pm. Their choices are veggies (usually carrots and celery), fruit (I always have on hand a selection of oranges, bananas, apples, pineapple, berries, etc.), hard-boiled eggs, cheddar cheese sticks, yogurt, and granola bars.

Here’s what we are eating this week:

Sunday:

Lunch ~ Lunch out at our favorite Mexican place — we love going there, especially on Sundays when kids meals are 99 cents. We get a TON of food for 6 people for under $20!! (That’s cheaper than McDonald’s for a family of our size, and tons healthier too!)

Dinner ~ leftovers

Monday:

Lunch ~ vegetable soup with crackers and homemade yogurt

Dinner ~ veal osso bucco, with mashed potatoes and mixed sautéed vegetables {Since I’m writing this on Monday night, I can share that we just ate this dinner and it was horrible. Sometimes my plans flop!}

Tuesday:

Lunch ~ sandwiches (peanut butter with jelly or honey, or turkey and cheese) with fresh fruits and veggies

Dinner ~ eating at the community dinner at Byron’s school

Wednesday:

Lunch ~ black bean quesadillas with fruit

Dinner ~ tuna noodle casserole with broccoli

Thursday:

Lunch ~ vegetable soup with crackers and homemade yogurt

Dinner ~ pot roast with potatoes and carrots

Friday:

Lunch ~ sandwiches (peanut butter with jelly or honey, or turkey and cheese) with fresh fruits and veggies

Dinner ~ chicken enchiladas with black beans, brown rice, tortilla chips, and homemade pico de gallo

Saturday:

Lunch ~ black bean quesadillas with fruit

Dinner ~ leftovers

What I spent this week:

Like I said before – most of my groceries come from my big pantry shops at GFS. Here is my receipt from Walmart this week:

Weekly Menus from Our Cozy Den ~ Feeding a family of 6 on under $250 a month!
It’s a terrible photo, I know. Sorry!

What I got this week: 2 gallons of skim milk, 1/2 gallon of whole milk for making yogurt, frozen strawberries (also for yogurt), 2 loaves of bread, 2 dozen eggs, chicken breasts, 2 bottles of orange juice, 2 boxes of cereal, almonds, chocolate chips (gotta have some fun stuff too!), corn tortillas, tortilla chips, 4 cans of beans, shampoo, and bananas. My grand total was $70.26, but WIC covered $26.76 of that, so I paid out of pocket $43.50.

Since I started posting all of my menus and receipts, I have noticed that my spending has gone down a little. I used to spend nearly all of my allotted $250, but now that I’m being held accountable {by you guys!}, I’m not picking up some of the impulse purchases that I did before. So thanks for that!! I may be able to decrease my budget to $200!

Here is the rundown for all of my September spending:

September 6th – 12th ~ Total spent: $37.56

September 13th – 19th ~ Total spent: $10.05

September 20th – 26th ~ Total spent: $0

September bulk shop ~ Total spent: $90.17

September 27th – Oct 3rd ~ Total spent: $43.50

TOTAL SPENT IN SEPTEMBER: $181.28

Thanks for stopping by!
