Our Weekly Menu: July 5th-11th

Weekly Menus from Our Cozy Den ~ Feeding a family of 6 on under $250 a month!

Today begins a new weekly feature on the blog… our menu! When I have posted in the past about how we live on $650/month and our low low grocery expenses, I got inundated with questions: What do you eat? Where do you shop? Is it healthy? So I wanted to go into more detail about what exactly we are eating each week, so you can see just how it breaks down.

*Now, I want to preface this by saying – I don’t want any negative feedback here. If you want to comment about how you think we could eat better, then no thanks. I think we eat pretty healthy. Yes, there is room for improvement. But nobody is perfect! We try to stay away from processed foods, and I make nearly everything from scratch. So having a little white flour in our weekly diet is okay, in my opinion. They don’t eat it all day every day and it certainly isn’t 6 servings like the old food pyramid suggests. I even made our own family food pyramid to help us all stay on track with lots of fruits and veggies! So please keep the negative comments to yourself! Of course I welcome questions and feedback!

A few notes before we get started:

  1. Breakfast is not included in the menu, because in our house it is fend-for-yourself. The choices are oatmeal, eggs, or my homemade cereal.
  2. I’m going to do an upcoming post about my large once-a-month pantry shop. I try to plan most of my menu to use what we already have on hand in the pantry and freezer. Bulk buying = BIG savings!
  3. Snacks are also not on the menu, but my kids do get a snack each afternoon around 4 pm. Their choices are veggies (usually carrots and celery), fruit (I always have on hand a selection of oranges, bananas, apples, pineapple, berries, etc.), hard-boiled eggs, cheddar cheese sticks, yogurt, and granola bars.

What I spent this week:

Like I said before, most of my menu comes from my pantry/freezer, so my weekly shops are only for fresh produce and small fill-in items. This week I bought:

Weekly Menus from Our Cozy Den ~ Feeding a family of 6 on under $250 a month!
Total for the week: $21.66

What we spend will vary from week to week, and this week is at the smaller end of the scale. Next week I might spend $60 or so, but it will always average out pretty low. From now on, I’m going to post my menu every week, as well as ALL of my grocery receipts, so you can see exactly what we buy and what we spend. I also received some WIC items today for free: 2 gallons of milk and 4 cans of black beans. Only my youngest qualifies for WIC any more, but every little bit helps!

Stay tuned for my upcoming post on my BIG monthly shop, money saving recipes and tips, and lots more!

Thanks for sharing! I always love to get new ideas on what to make. Especially LUNCH. I’ve got a kid who is tired of sandwiches.
