Paradise in the Black Forest

We didn’t get to do much traveling during my long, difficult pregnancy. Now that Hiccup has arrived, I decided it was time to get out there and see some stuff! The little guy is six weeks old now, so we thought he was ready for his first overnighter.

Let me tell you, finding a place in Europe for a family with 4 kids is not easy! We’ve pretty much outgrown hotel rooms and now will be staying only in apartments or houses, called “vacation rentals”. I checked several sites, including www.homeaway.comwww.housetrip.com, and www.vacation-apartments.com. For weeks, I didn’t get any responses from my inquiries. Our 4-day weekend was quickly approaching, so on Thursday morning (24 hours before I wanted to leave), I sent one last email, hoping to find an availability in Germany’s famous Black Forest. Miraculously, they were available, so we quickly packed some bags and we were off!

In case you’ve never heard of the Black Forest, it’s a region in southern Germany known for its beauty. It’s called the Black Forest because the trees are so dense that sunlight can barely reach the forest floor. It’s also thought to be the inspiration for many fairy tales, like Snow White and Hansel & Gretel.

I think God knew what he was doing when he presented us with this place to stay. It. Was. Amazing.

This house was nestled in a meadow in a valley, surrounded by forest on all sides, with an adorable babbling brook running right in front of the house.

The house and the brook.
The view of the meadow.
The view from our balcony.
Playing in the water.
Going on a walk in the forest, just steps from our front door.
It was so quiet and peaceful out there!

And to top it all off, they only charged us 180€ for 3 nights! The other places that I had been emailing were about 140€ per night. It truly was an extraordinary find! The apartment itself was ideal: it had 2 bedrooms (a must when traveling with kids), 2 bathrooms, a living room and kitchen. And it was very clean and well-maintained.  The friendly owners gave us directions to a local grocery store so we were able to save a ton of money by eating breakfast and dinner in the apartment. And  a fantastic bonus was the playground and sandbox where the kids had a blast playing.

If you want to see the rental listing, I found it here: http://www.vacation-apartments.com/7140.htm

I’ll write more soon about all the other fantastic things we saw in the Black Forest. But first, I have a TON of laundry to do! Auf wiedersehen!
